Employee Amputates Finger in Screw Machine

At approximately 9:45 a.m. on October 10, 2007, an employee was cleaning around and removing metal chips on a Traub screw machine which was used to make brass adapters. The identity of this machine was Traub 103 TB005, B60/405. A rotating brass shaft, 0.875 inches in diameter stock, was being consumed to make the parts. The employee put his left hand, which had a rubber glove on, under the rotating shaft. The shaft caught his hand and the rotation resulted in the amputation of finger number five and fractures of his third and forth fingers. According to the supervisor, the stock rotated at 1200 RPMs and turned clockwise if you face the machine. Two other machine operators observed the accident and were operating Traub machines.
