Employee's Hand Is Caught in Conveyor, Sustains Fracture

Employee #1 was sweeping garbage from underneath a conveyor belt. The conveyor belt was located approximately 24 in. off the floor. At the time of the incident, the floor area was covered with garbage and debris. At the time of inspection, the pulley, belt and gear were guarded but did not meet OSHA standards. Based on photos from the employer, taken shortly after the accident, there was no guard. Employee #1 stated he was sweeping the garbage when the conveyor abruptly started and dragged his broom handle into the unguarded in-bound roller underneath the conveyor belt. Employee #1 sustained a fracture and was hospitalized.
