Employee Struck by Load Falling Off Forklift, Fractures Leg

On July 8, 2008, a coworker was backing the forklift inside a shipping container or trailer to take the load, which was lumber, out of the trailer. While the forklift was backing over the dock plate or ramp connected to the trailer and dock, the load fell off. Employee #1 was struck by the falling load. When the coworker realized Employee #1 was hit by the load, he called for emergency assistance. The coworker was certified to operate a forklift. The load was estimated to have weighed approximately 2,000 pounds. Employee #1 suffered fractures to his right femur and left tibia, and his spine. Employee #1's treatment included surgery, pain medication, and physical therapy. Employee #1 was admitted to the hospital on July 8, 2008, and discharged from the hospital on July 18, 2008.
