Employee Amputates Right Index Finger

At approximately 2:40 p.m. on October 13, 2006, Employee #1, a butcher, was using a meat grinder without the guard. The guard on the meat grinder had been broken and missing for at least five days before the accident. Employee #1 used a push stick to move the meat into the neck of the machine when his right index finger contacted the grinding worm. The rotating action of the grinding worm amputated the finger to its first knuckle. He was transported to a medical center. At the hospital, he underwent surgical procedures to repair the damaged distal phalanx of his right index finger. Following the surgical operation and subsequent medical treatment, he was released the same day.
