Worker Bruises and Lacerates Two Fingers in Machine Accident

At approximately 2:30 p.m. on October 27, 2006, a temporary employee of East West Staffing was working at Jessie Lord Bakery LLC, in Torrance, California. The company was a wholesale supplier of baked goods to restaurants. The employee positioned 6 lb 11 oz metal cans of pumpkin pie filling in the fruit cooling section of the Edlund Co. Heritage Can Opener Station (Model 825A). The line opened large cans of fruit pie filling and dumped it into a collection vat. As the cans were ejected from the can opener they were pushed by a ram onto a passive conveyor rail line. Each can moved the one before it, as it was pushed out onto the rails of the conveyor. A series of circular metal hoops ("turning cage") surrounded the rail line to gradually turn the cans over and dump their contents in the collection vat. The cage gave the appearance of a guard, but it was much too open to furnish any protection. The employee put his hands in the cage in the area just past the can opener. At that point, a can coming onto the line struck his left hand and pinned it against another can. The employee yanked his left hand out of the line through the turning cage. In doing so, he bruised and lacerated two fingers. He was given outpatient treatment at Western Hand Center.
