Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 200651305
Event: 07/16/2007
Employee Crushed Fingertips in Frame Press Clamp

On July 16, 2007, Employee #1, a woodworking machine operator, had two fingertips crushed, losing a small amount of the tip of one finger, when his hand became caught between the closing clamp of a Lancaster frame press and the wood piece in the press. The press squeezes glued frames and their joints together. The wood thickness was about 0.75 inches, and the frame clamp extended above the wood a couple of inches. The air-operated press has a lever control which is operated with one hand, and Employee #1 generally holds down the middle of the part with his other hand in order to keep it level and true, and to prevent it from popping out while the frame is squeezing shut. In this case, Employee #1 was not attentive to where his hand (the one holding down the part) was located as he was closing the clamps. His hand was at the edge adjacent to the closing clamp, and his fingertip was caught. Since the accident, the employer has devised a hand tool with which to hold down the part while the frame press is squeezing it shut.
