Event: 01/31/2006
Employees Are Injured in Fall Through Skylight; One Dies

On January 31, 2006, two employees were building a wood curb for a 9 foot diameter octagon-shaped skylight opening. Employee #2 was measuring and marking 2 in. by 4 in. lumber for Employee #1 to cut. Employee #1 was kneeling next to the opening, holding a piece of lumber he had already cut, and making a second cut. A gust of wind caused Employee #1 to lose his balance and fall through the skylight opening, 25 ft to a wood floor. As he was falling, the board in his hand struck Employee #2's head, causing him to fall backwards onto the roof. Employee #1 was airlifted to Prince Georges Trauma Center, where he died as a result of his injuries. Employee #2 was transported via ambulance to Fort Washington Hospital, where he was treated for a head laceration and a concussion.
