Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202549028
Event: 05/19/2008
Employee Crushes Finger in Machine

On May 19, 2008, Employee #1, a supervisor, was cleaning a horizontal rubber mill with 12-inch diameter rolls. To clean the rolls, he operated the mill with the leading edge of both rolls running in opposite directions, which eliminated the in-running nip point on the upper side of the rolls. He wrapped his right hand in a rag and placed the rag on the surface of the roll nearest him to clean it. However, when he moved his hand to the underside of the roll (where the roll movement did create an in-running nip point), the rag and his right hand were pulled into the nip point, crushing his fingers. Employee #1 was able to reverse the roll action and call for help. His direct supervisor, the owner, called emergency medical personnel. They arrived and transported him to a nearby medical center, where he underwent surgical procedures that included the amputation of three fingers. Following the medical care, he was hospitalized.
