Event: 08/30/2006
Employee Is Killed in Fall from Cliff in Mountain Descent

On August 30, 2006, Employees #1 and #2, both U.S. Forest Service telecommunications workers, were laboring on Akwe Mountain, near Yakutat, AK, when they were unable to mobilize due to adverse weather conditions. The employees were suffering from hypothermic conditions. Based on the forecasted continuity of adverse weather, the employees decided to relocate to a lower elevation, where they could be reached by a rescue helicopter. During the descent, Employee #1 fell off a cliff, about 200 ft high, and was killed.
