Worker Lacerates Wrist While Operating a Circular Hand Saw

At approximately 3:00 p.m. on November 2, 2006, a carpenter with Valley Builders, Inc., was at a job site located in Altadena, California. Valley Builders, Inc., engaged in the construction of single-family residences. At the time of the accident, the carpenter was on the east side of the site cutting lumber with a Skilsaw, a power-driven circular hand saw After placing, a 30-foot piece of 2 in. by 12 in. lumber on the ground the worker began cutting bevels in the wood so that it could be used as fascia board. Holding the saw with both hands the employee bent over the piece of lumber and started cutting the board lengthwise, when he stepped on a rock causing him to lose his balance. He fell forward and let go of the saw's trigger with his right hand, while attempting to catch himself with his left hand. His left wrist came in contact with the saw blade. The employee suffered lacerations to the left wrist. The retractable guard on the saw did not function properly at the time of the incident, because the mechanism became clogged with dirt when it fell to the ground.
