Employee Amputes Hand in Sheet Line Machine

On May 13, 2005, Employee #1 was in the process of reconditioning the matte roll on a sheet line machine by wiping the roll with a rag when the rag became caught and pulled his hand into the nip point. He suffered an amputation and was hospitalized. Further investigation revealed that it was normal procedure to clean the roll while in motion. No extension tools or equivalent safe guards were provided to protect the employee from contacting the nip point.
