Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201084233
Event: 06/26/2003
Employee is injured when caught in conveyor belt

On June 26, 2003, Employee #1 was observing two, in-running, conveyor belts on the underside of a tomato harvester. The conveyor belts were located 68 inches above the working surface and they were separated by a 2-inch gap. As Employee #1 adjusted his baseball cap, his hand became caught in the point where the in-running conveyor belts come together. The conveyor belts pulled in Employee #1's hand and arm. He attempted to pull his arm out with his free hand, which also became stuck in the conveyor belt. A coworker heard Employee #1 screaming and turned off the tomato harvester. Employee #1 was hospitalized and treated for third-degree burns to both his arms, due to the friction of the in-running conveyor belts.
