Compactor Overturns And Pins and Crushes Employee

At approximately 10:00 a.m. on June 15, 2004, Employee #1 was operating a vibratory compactor preparing for paving of roadway. Employee #1 was traveling toward the east on the north side of the road compacting crusher run gravel. The front steel compacting drum of the unit was overhanging the north side of the gravel fill. Employee #1 failed to recognize the hazard and went past the center of gravity of the unit, rolling the compactor over on its top and pinning Employee #1 under the compactor. Employee #1 died by positional asphyxiation.
