Event: 12/20/2003
Employee injures back in fall onto rock

At approximately 8:30 a.m. on December 20, 2003, Employee #1, a rock splitter at an open pit rock quarry located in Randsburg, CA, was working in Quarry Area #1 with a coworker. Employee #1 was preparing to start splitting a square shaped slab that was approximately 4 feet square and 1 foot thick. The slab was in a near vertical position with its lower portion buried in dirt and rubble. Employee #1 bent down and, with his fingers interlaced, grabbed the far corner of the slab. When he pulled back towards his chest in an attempt to stand it up, the corner broke off. He fell straight backward and landed on his back on top of a sharp rock which was protruding about 6 inches out of the ground. He suffered a spinal cord contusion and was transported by helicopter to a hospital where he was hospitalized.
