Employee amputates finger and thumb in chain drive

On June 4, 2003, an employee of Freres Lumber Co. Inc. was assisting other coworkers in clearing a plug up on the outfeed and unloader of a Plywood Dryer. While attempting to pull a piece of wood from the chain and sprocket drive, the employee's index finger and thump tip were pulled into the drive and wedged between the frame of the unloader and the chain drive idler sprocket. The employee's finger and thumb became trapped. The idler sprocket was loosened up and the drive was turned backwards to release the finger and thumb. The emergency first aid was administered. The employee was transported by ambulance to the hospital and was hospitalized for amputation.
