Investigation Summary
On September 16, 2002, Employees #1 and #2 were working as part of a crew demolishing an interior brick wall in a building built in the early 1900s. When demolition began on the upper wall, the employer had saw-cut the west end. Demolition began at the east end, proceeding from ceiling to floor, effectively cutting the wall at the east end. This compromised the wall's lateral support. Apparently, the crew had just removed the support for an arch feature and Employees #1 and #2 were clearing off the beam that had supported that portion of the wall. One of them was using a rivet buster and the other was removing the loose brick when the wall fell on them. Both Employee #1 and #2 sustained injuries that required hospitalization. Apparently, the support for the arch feature had been integral to keeping the wall upright. The employer did not have a demolition plan for the removal of brick walls. Weeks earlier, two coworkers had demolished the lower part of this wall in the basement. It was found that the basement wall and the beams resting on it had been supporting the upper wall that later fell on Employees #1 and #2. This earlier demolition had damaged the structural support for the wall, and the shoring installed by the general contractor was inadequate.
