Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202327839
Event: 07/16/2002
Employee Dies after Suffering an Apparent Heart Attack

On July 30, 2002, Employee #1 was one of 40 operators of off-road, articulating, 25-ton dump trucks being used to prepare the site of a new airport terminal. He flagged down another driver, complained of chest pains and then collapsed. Employee #1 could not be revived and he died of an apparent heart attack. His core body temperature was not obtained, but he had complained of feeling ill earlier that day. The medical examiner's report and associated tests did not indicate an electrolyte imbalance or a problem with dehydration. Microscopic analysis of his heart tissue indicated that he had suffered several minor heart attacks on July 16, 2002. All of the vehicles at the site were equipped with air-conditioning and the workers were trained in heat stress and told to drink plenty of fluids and take breaks as necessary.
