Employee Injured When Hand Is Caught Between Vehicles

At 6:45 a.m. on August 13, 2004, Employee #1, was working as a groundkeeper. He wanted to put his hat, safety glasses, and gloves inside the vehicle (1) he was go to be driving, a Ford F350 duo cab truck. His vehicle was parked closely to another vehicle (2) a pick-up truck towing a flat trailer containing a large lawn mower. Approaching the vehicles from the rear, Employee #1 walked between them. Employee #1 was aware that there was a driver in vehicle 2 and he paused 30 seconds on the passenger side of his vehicle door to see if the driver intended to move his vehicle. As Employee #1 opened and held the door with his right hand, vehicle 2 pulled forward. The fender on the 4 feet by 6 feet trailer pinned Employee #1's right hand between the trailer and the open door. The first phalanx of Employee #1's right ring finger was amputated.
