Investigation Summary
On June 4, 2002, a can of pepper spray was discarded into the recyclable waste stream in the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. The pepper spray was transported to the BFI trash recycling center. It appeared that the front end loader used to load the sort line ran over the can of pepper spray with its left front tire, resulting in damage to the pepper spray container and subsequent release of the contents. The aerosol cloud of pepper spray drifted into the sort line area, causing the thirteen employees there to experience symptoms of eye and respiratory irritation which caused their hospitalization.
