Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201351962
Event: 10/15/2002
Employee Killed When Struck by a Vehicle

On October 15, 2002, Employee #1 was part of a crew working on a construction project of an interstate highway. He was operating a sweeper machine that was used to clean the highway, but would occasionally leave the machine to manually sweep sections of the highway. He wore a warning vest and was within a properly marked highway construction zone. Signs indicating the presence of a work zone were also adequate. Two local sheriff deputies were in their vehicles had their emergency lights flashing. While he was manually sweeping the highway, a vehicle traveling on the interstate drove through the barriers at a high speed and killed Employee #1. He died at the scene from multiple injuries. The operator of the vehicle did not stop and sped from the scene, but was later stopped by one of the sheriff deputies.
