Investigation Nr: 201680741
Event: 01/22/2002
Employee injured when fingers amputated by gang saw

On January 22, 2002, Employee #1 was using a gang saw with 4 blades mounted 1.5 inches apart. He was ripping 2-inch by 6-inch by 8-foot lumber and producing 2-inch by 2-inch by 8 foot lumber. The saw has self-feed rollers which pull the stock through the cutting blades. Employee #1 put the fresh cut 2-inch by 2-inch lumber into the pile and was returning to the feed end to run another board. He stumbled or slipped and tried to catch himself. Employee #1 was not sure whether he placed his hand over the blades or grabbed something underneath the gang saw which came into contact with the gang saw blades. Employee #1 amputated his fingers and lacerated the palm of his hand and was hospitalized.
