Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170239305
Event: 11/20/2000
FALLING TREES IN UNIT

At approximately 1200 hours on 11/20/2000, victim #1 was fatally injured due to multiple head injuries suffered in a tree falling incident in a tree harvest unit. He was working with 2 other tree cutters and was working in a tree strip between them. The tree cutters were at least 2 tree lengths apart. The victim apparently had tried to fall a 14.5 inches diameter width when it fell back on the stump. The victim now had a "longer tree" and looked for a "pusher tree" to knock it over. He found one but noticed 4 smaller WF in between the "longer tree" and "poster tree"; the victim cut up these 4 smaller trees and left them standing. The victim then started cutting a fore cut on the "pusher tree". While he was doing this, the original WH split at the stump end and fell over backwards pushing two of the smaller WF towards the victim. One WF directly struck and pinned the victim. The victim apparently died within minutes.
