Employee Is Injured by Tire Failure While Repairing Wheel

On May 4, 2006, Employee #1, a mechanic with RMT Trucking Company, Inc., was repairing a flat tire on a truck that was waiting to pick up a load of aggregate at an aggregate plant. After removing the tire, he found the leak to be a crack in the rim next to the valve core. Without dismounting the tire, he welded the crack. Before waiting for the rim to cool, he inflated the tire and began to weld again. The tire then failed, struck his head, and knocked him unconscious. Employee #1 was hospitalized for a skull fracture, internal bleeding and facial lacerations. The cause of the accident was Employee #1's failure to remove the tire from the rim before welding or making repairs.
