Employee drowns in fall from barge into waterway

Between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon on August 17, 2000, Employee #1, a 19-year-old roustabout, was on a crew assigned to clean and paint the side of barge #111. At approximately 11:30 a.m., Employee #1 was last seen walking toward the office, 200 ft from the waterway. He did not report back to work after lunch. Once the crew members realized he was missing, they began to search the yard and saw a red hat floating in the water. The local police were called and a search of the waterway was initiated. Employee #1's body was recovered at 10:35 a.m. the following day. He had apparently fallen from the barge and drowned. He was not wearing a flotation device at the time of the accident.
