Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 200620425
Event: 06/21/1999
Employee dies of natural causes

At approximately 1:00 a.m. on June 21, 1999, Employee #1 was found unconscious at the bottom of a set of wooden stairs outside a printing building. The supervisor who found him had seen him at about 11:20 p.m.; since Employee #1 had been sick with a cold the previous Friday, the supervisor asked him if he was feeling better, to which he said yes with the help of nasal spray. At approximately 11:50 p.m., the supervisor saw Employee #1 performing his normal duties of baling waste paper in the printing building, and he appeared to be fine. When the supervisor found him on the ground, he was facing away from the stairs with his feet closest to the wall of the building. His drink cup was next to the first step and there was a small 20 lb roll of Meow Mix paper for making the bags was on the ground in front of the dock. The supervisor called out to Employee #1 and, getting no response, checked to see if he was breathing. He then went back into the building and called for help before returning to Employee #1 to monitor his breathing until the ambulance arrived. When the EMTs were placing him on the stretcher, he told them to leave them alone, but that was the only time the supervisor heard him speak. Employee #1 died at the hospital on June 28, 1999, of what the medical examiner determined to be natural causes.
