Employee killed in fall from steep slope

On May 24, 1989, Employee #1 fell from a steep slope while attempting to assist a fallen climber. There were bad weather conditions: 70-mph wind, blowing snow, and 20-ft visibility at the time of the accident. The body of Employee #1 was not recovered. Employee #1 was a volunteer at the Park Service, and upon initiating the search for the fallen climber, he was put on a paid status, as employed by the Park Service.
