Employee Sustains Partial Amputation of Finger

At about 7:50 p.m. on January 12, 2005, Employee #1, a finishing laborer and regular employee with twelve years experience in carpet manufacturing at Shaw Diversified Services, Inc., was working in the manufacturing area, performing a regularly assigned task of collecting lint. He was pushing the metal trash bin to the lint collection area in order to change out bins of carpet lint. As he was pushing the bin, the small finger on his left hand got caught between the trash bin and the edge of a lint collection chute. As a result, his fingertip had to be amputated. The wheeled metal bin weighed about 800 pounds. It was irregularly shaped, with a bottom length of 42 inches and a top length of 63 inches. It stood 48 inches tall, sloping to 45 inches tall, with roughly a trapezoidal shape from the side. He was not hospitalized.
