Employee's Fingers Are Amputated by Wood Shaper

Between 12:05 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. on February 6, 2004, Employee #1 was operating a shaper at Corona Millworks, a manufacturer of wood cabinet doors. Employee #1 began work at 6:00 a.m. and set up and operated a shaper (Macchine Casade Shaper, Model Number F/114, Serial Number 88-33-14) located in the Planer Department. He reported performing approximately 30 jobs by Noon. The employer has two lunch periods, and all the other employees in the Planer Department and general area went to lunch. Employee #1 was either setting up the shaper or working on a personal project. He removed the automatic feeder (Steff 2000) and moved the guide and ventilation collection duct. He placed both hands on a piece of wood and, while working, his right hand contacted the unguarded knives. He was hospitalized with amputation of portions of three fingers of his right hand.
