Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201181815
Event: 10/24/2003
Employee fractures leg when pinned by scaffold

At approximately 8:10 a.m. on October 24, 2003, Employee #1 and a coworker were demolishing a plaster ceiling using a rolling scaffold on the fourth floor of a building. The building had many historical wooden window frames, which the employees were to protect during the demolition work. The employees were demolishing small pieces of ceiling plaster near the window frame where a bigger piece was still attached to the ceiling joists by nails. Since the building was approximately 90 years old, the bigger piece lost its nail support, peeled off the ceiling, hit the top railing of the rolling scaffold, and knocked it over. The working platform was erected 7 ft, 2 in. from the concrete floor. The coworker jumped off the scaffold safely. However, Employee #1 fell with the scaffold pinning him, and fracturing his left leg. Employee #1 was hospitalized.
