Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201181237
Event: 06/28/2002
Employee injured in fall descending stepladder

On June 28, 2002, Employee #1, an electrician with Metropolitan Electrical Construction, Inc., was on a 12 ft fiberglass ladder, working on an exhaust fan disconnect located just above the false ceiling on the ground floor of a building undergoing renovations. At approximately 9:35 a.m., he had completed the job and was descending the ladder when it began to wobble. Employee #1 lost his balance and fell approximately 8 ft to the ground, landing on his right shoulder and striking the back of his head. Emergency Services was called and he was transported to San Francisco General Hospital for treatment of head lacerations, and cracked and fractured vertebrae. The employer was cited for an accident-related violation, general, of T8CCR 1675(e), for not providing a substantial base for the stepladder, which allowed it to move and cause Employee #1 to lose his balance.
