Event: 07/16/2005
Employee Amputates Finger Repairing a Pipe Threader

Employee #1, an electrician, was threading electrical conduit pipe using a 120-volt pipe threader. The pump on the pipe threader was not working properly, as the oil was circulating. With the threader energized, Employee #1 removed the cover, exposing the 9-in.- and 1-in.-diameter, inward-running gears and pump. As Employee #1 was placing the oil hose back on the pump, he caught the tip of his left middle finger in the gears of the pipe threader. Employee #1 was hospitalized with an amputated fingertip.
