Event: 05/06/2005
Employee's Thumb Is Amputated in Conveyor Belt

On May 6, 2005, Employee #1, a mechanic with Nor-Cal Beverage Co., Inc., had completed repairs to a conveyor belt. Having deenergized the conveyor to work on the belt, he then energized it and began making adjustments to the belt. With the conveyor belt operating, the employee grabbed the belt with both hands and tried pulling it towards him to get it to track properly. The belt grabbed his right hand, and his thumb was caught between the belt and the conveyors' end roller, resulting in the amputation of his thumb. He was transported to Sutter General Hospital in Sacramento, where he was released the following morning.
