Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201176450
Event: 10/08/2004
Employee is injured when pinned by slabs

On October 8, 2004, Employee #1 of We're Tops, Inc. located in Woodland, California, was working alone in the facility's cutting room. He went over to a wooden "A" frame rack that held large slabs of man-made granite used in the fabrication of counter-tops. Employee #1 wanted to check the fourth slab, so he stood in front of the rack and was using his body to support the slabs. He peeled the first three slabs apart until he reached the fourth slab. The combined weight of the four slabs, that was about 2200 lbs., was too great for him to hold. They fell towards Employee #1, pinning him against the frame that was the closet behind him. Employee #1 sustained serious injuries to his neck area. The Woodland Fire Department transported Employee #1 to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, California, where he was hospitalized.
