Employee's Thumb Is Amputated in Router Kick Back

On September 15, 2009, Employee #1 was cutting out a profile on a circular piece of wood using an Ekstrom Carlson router. The router is a single cutting head shaper with no guard installed. He was making a circular pass on the wood piece when the wood piece kicked back into the cutter head drawing in his hand. The cutter head cut his left thumb up to his wrist. He was hospitalized and his thumb was eventually amputated.
