Worker Dies When His Ladder Touches an Overhead Power Line

At approximately 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 16, 2004, Employee #1, a 23-year-old Palmero (date farm worker), a regular full-time employee of Bacerra Date Ranch was working in a date grove in Thermal, California. The palmero that Employee #1 was walking across was approximately 50-feett wide with electrical utility easement; he was carrying an aluminum extension ladder vertically at the time and his ladder contacted a 7,200-volt overhead power line. Employee #1 was using an ALACO aluminum extension ladder. The base length of the ladder is 20 feet and it can be extended from 20 to 40 feet. Cal/OSHA measured the ladder where it fell. It was extended to a length of 32-feet and 1-inch. The power line was approximately 30-feet above the ground. Paramedics responded and transported employee #1 to the John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital, Indio, California where he was pronounced dead at 8:10 a.m.
