Employee Injures Hand When Crushed Between Mast And Lift

At 7:10 a.m. on July 16, 2001, Employee #1 was fork lift driver working for a fruit packing and shipping business. He has been the fork lift driver since March 23, 1998. On the day of the accident, Employee #1 was stacking fruit boxes with a fork lift, propane powered Caterpiller Model Number # 1037, Serial Number 6AM90176. Employee #1 had a soda sitting in the cup holder dashboard area next to the operation levers. The soda fell between the outside wall and the mast of the lift. Employee #1 leaned over the steering wheel to retrieve the soda. As he leaned over, Employee #1 activated the tilt back lever for the mast, crushing his right hand between the mast and the wall of the lift. Employee #1 was hospitalized for his injuries.
