Employee Loses Right Finger Tip While Adjusting Belt Sander

At approximately 10:30 a.m. on January 10, 2001, Employee #1, a vocational instructor of Centinela State Prison, lost his right fingertip while adjusting a handheld belt sander. He was adjusting the tracking on a new sanding belt when his right little finger got caught in the rollers that drive the belt. The incident was reported on January 11 by another employee. It was determined that this tool is required to be running during the adjustment, and the hazard is readily apparent to the operator. Employee #1 was given first aid at the scene and was transported to Pioneer Medical Center in Brawley, California for treatment.
