Employee Suffers Chest Laceration When Struck by Angle Iron

At approximately 6:55 a.m. on September 6, 2002, an employee walked on the service area roadway inside the tunnel of a sports complex under construction. He passed underneath two ironworkers who were in the rectangular basket of a Genie S-40 aerial lift. The ironworkers were installing 11 ft solid web angle irons for diagonal bracing, and placed them on top of the basket's handrails. The ironworkers were positioning the first brace when the second one shifted and fell to the ground, striking the employee below on the left side of his chest. He sustained a severe laceration and was hospitalized. One of the ironworkers, realizing that there were employees below, shouted to warn them. The accident resulted from the angle irons not being secured, and the ground area not being restricted from vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
