Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 200340453
Event: 08/28/2003
Employee injured when unsecured trusses fall on his back

On August 28, 2003, Employee #1 was working at a truss manufacturer assisting in the construction of wooden trusses. He was working with two coworkers building trusses on an automated press. As they were manufacturing an order of trusses, they observed that the press was not installing truss plates on some areas of several trusses. After the order was completed, the trusses were set aside and leaned up against an existing stack of trusses. The stack of trusses were not secured to prevent them from tipping over. Two trusses, each needing a ridge plate, were chosen for repair. A truss was laid on the ground in order to attach a metal truss plate. Employee #1 used a tool similar in size and shape to a hand held asphalt tamper, called a plate stomper, to attach the missing plate. He was repairing the truss with his back to the stack of trusses. Five of the trusses fell over and struck his back, knocking him to the ground. He landed on top of the plate stomper with five trusses landing on his back. He was hospitalized with a fracture.
