Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 14402531
Event: 12/09/1988
ELECTRIC SHOCK - CONTACT WITH OVERHEAD LINE THRU BOOM

Three employees were setting up a flat bed truck with a well drilling rig to remove a submerged water well pump. It was raining, and the ground was wet and muddy. One of the employees was holding a cable to the top drum, and a second employee was holding the cable to the bottom drum. The third employee was operating the controller at the rear of the truck to raise the mast. The first two employees were also at the rear of the truck, keeping the cables from tangling on their drums. As the third employee raised the mast, it contacted a 614-kilovolt overhead power line. The two employees holding the cables received electric shocks. One of them was electrocuted.
