FATALITY CAUSED BY CHROMIC OBSTRUCTIVE LUNG DISEASE

EMPLOYEE #1 WAS EMPLOYED BY HANDSCHY INDUSTRIES FROM MARCH 6, 1972 TO JANUARY 23, 1984. PRIOR TO HIS EMPLOYMENT AT HANDSCHY, THE EMPLOYEE WORKED FOR TWO OTHER LOCAL OTHER LOCAL PRINTING INK MANUFACTURERS. WHILE AT HANDSCHY, EMPLOYEE #1 WORKED IN SEVERAL AREAS; PRIMARILY IN BATCH WEIGHING AND IN THE MILLROOM. THE EMPLOYEE DIED ON NOVEMBER 26, 1986. THE AUTOPSY REPORT INDICATES THAT THE CAUSE OF DEATH WAS CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE LUNG DISEASE, FIBROSIS AND CORONARY ATHEROSCLEROSIS. AIR SAMPLING DONE DURING A PREVIOUS INSPECTION IN 1984 AND DURING THE PRESENT INSPECTION INDICATES NO OVER-EXPOSURES TO ANY AIR CONTAMINANTS. IT APPEARS THAT A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE FORMER EMPLOYEE'S ILLNESS AND HIS OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE, IF ANY, CANNOT BE ESTABLISHED.
