EMPLOYEE CRUSHED BY FALLING TREE

ON JUNE 13, 1984, AT APPROXIMATELY 7:30 AM, EMPLOYEE #1 WAS CUTTING RIGHT-OF-WAY LOGS FOR A TEMPORARY ROAD. HE HAD WEDGED THE TREE HE WAS FELLING AND HAD MADE HIS UNDERCUT. AS THE TREE STARTED TO FALL, IT'S TOP HIT ANOTHER STANDING TREE, APPROXIMATELY 38 FEET AWAY. THIS CAUSED THE FALLING TREE TO BOW AT THE TOP AND KICK BACK, SLIDING ACROSS A SMALL SPRUCE WINDFALL THAT WAS LYING HORIZONTALLY ABOUT 4 FEET OFF THE GROUND.THE FALLING TREE PINNED THE EMPLOYEE AGAINST ANOTHER STANDING TREE ABOUT 7 1/2 FEET AWAY. HIS CHEST WAS CRUSHED. EMPLOYEE #1 HAD NOT CLEARED A WAY OF ESCAPE BEFORE FELLING THE TREE.
