Four employees overcome by ammonia during release

At approximately 7:30 a.m. on April 26, 1990, during the second shift, the odor of ammonia was detected in the fillet room. When the odor became stronger, Employees #1 through #4 became light-headed and fainted. The fillet room was evacuated through the designated emergency exit door. When the odor dissipated, the employees were allowed back into the fillet room. Meanwhile, Employees #1 through #4 were taken to the Union Memorial Hospital emergency room. They were observed and released. The ammonia was released from a high pressure leak in a cooling coil of the room's air conditioning unit. Further releases occurred at 11:20 p.m., 1:05 a.m., and 3:30 p.m. the next day. Each time the room was evacuated. During these subsequent releases, no employees were taken to the hospital.
