Accident Investigation Summary
Summary Nr: 170395701Event: 06/09/1992Employee Injured In Trench Cave-In
At approximately 8:10 a.m. on May 27, Employee #1 was preparing to install storm sewer piping in a trench that was 20 ft long by 5 ft wide by 4 ft 8 in. deep. A large tree stump, which had been deeply buried, was now located near the surface of the excavation face, covered by only a few inches of earth. The tree stump was not visible in the excavation face. It was raining. Employee #1 was working in the excavation near the tree stump when the earth near the tree stump collapsed and struck him on the lower left leg, breaking his patella. He was hospitalized.
