EMPLOYEES BURNED IN EXPLOSION OF NAPTHA VAPORS

ON DECEMBER 12, 1985, AN EXPLOSION OCCURRED WHILE EMPLOYEES WERE WASHING SHOP TOWELS CONTAINING NAPTHA. NAPTHA VAPORS AT THE REAR OF AN 800 POUND ALSCO ATMOSPHERE WASHWHEEL IGNITED. THE FIRE SPREAD TO A RESTROOM LOCATED ABOUT EIGHT FEET BEHIND THE WASHWHEEL. AN EXPLOSION IN THE RESTROOM BLEW OUT THE WALLS AND CAUSED SECOND AND THIRD DEGREE BURNS ON THE FACE, HANDS AND BACK OF EMPLOYEES #1 AND #2. EMPLOYEE #3, WHO WAS STANDING APPROXIMATELY 20 FEET FROM THE WASHWHEEL, RECEIVED SECOND DEGREE BURNS TO HIS FACE AND ARMS.
