Investigation Summary
During the COVID-19 Pandemic, employees of an acute care hospital provided medical services to suspected and confirmed COVID-19 patients. Employee #1 was assigned to perform general maintenance on patient rooms in the hospital. These tasks include painting, cleaning exhausts, measuring airflow in negative pressure rooms, testing electrical systems, and checking for leaks in the Intensive Care Unit, Airborne Infection Isolation Rooms, and Temporary Isolation Rooms used to treat suspected and positive COVID-19 cases. Prior to entry employee #1 would meet with the local nurse manager to schedule the work and would only enter the rooms if they were vacant and cleaned. Employee #1 used an employer-provided N95 respirator when performing this work. Employee #2, a registered nurse, was assigned to work with two positive COVID-19 patients. On May 20, 2020, Employee #1 began to experience chills and left work to isolate at home but on May 27, 2020, he was hospitalized for approximately 24 hours. On April 4, 2020, employee #2 began to experience chills, headache, chest congestion, coughing, fatigue, and intermittent wheezing and managed these symptoms at home. Employee #2 was hospitalized on April 12, 2020. Per the employer's injury report there was no known exposure, but the employee may have been exposed due to re-using the same gown and mask between treating COVID-19 patients.
