At 10:15 a.m. on December 31, 2019, an employee was prepping the trench area when the soil, saturated with water, collapsed underneath the 8-foot by 20-foot trench box that was not installed within two feet from the bottom of the excavation. The employee was hospitalized to treat a fractured right leg, a punctured lung, and a fractured right arm.
