Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 171057532
Event: 03/09/1999
Employee's leg fractured when pinned against pipe in trench

Employee #1 was part of a crew laying 4 in. long pipe in a trench. The bottom of the larger trench had been carved into a V-shape to meet the sloping requirements of the Type C soil. The larger trench also had a benched area that was approximately 2 ft high. A section of the V-shaped trench fell from the side, pinning Employee #1's leg against the pipe. He was able to get out of the trench on his own and soon thereafter work stopped for the day because of snow. Employee #1 went to the hospital later that day, where he was treated for a hairline fracture of his lower leg.
