Event: 06/19/1996
Employee's fingers amputated when caught in rollers

At 11:00 a.m., Employee #1 was working as a pulpit operator at the Plymouth Division of Nucor Steel. The mill had just finished a pass change. A coworker was welding a repair on the delivery side of stand #14 at roll mill #2, while the stand was still running. Employee #1 saw his coworker making the repair and assumed that the stand was not running. He went to the entry side and put his right hand on the rolls to check their condition. His fingers and hand were caught by the spinning rolls and pulled in. He sustained total amputation of his right middle finger, amputation of his index, ring, and small fingers to the second knuckle, and tendon damage to his thumb. Employee #1 received first-aid treatment from the staff emergency technicians and nurse, and was transported by ambulance to University Hospital in Salt Lake City.
