Employee drowns in logging accident

Employee #1, a skidder operator, was working in a swampy, flooded timber area for a small logging company. He was operating a John Deere model 548 cable skidder with dual tires at the front and rear, hooking up felled trees to the cable behind the skidder. According to a coworker, Employee #1 was hooking up a third log to the cable when he slipped and fell face down into the 2 to 3 ft deep water. Due to the difficult terrain, it took the coworker between 5 and 8 minutes to reach Employee #1. Emergency 911 was called and the coworker tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate Employee #1. The coroner's preliminary report listed the cause of death as drowning. Employee #1 had approximately 25 years of experience with this type of work. He was wearing a hard hat when he was found.
